A Sociological Analysis of the Rupture of the Social Identity of the Ibn Tabataba Movement, With a Focus on the Role of Zayd Ibn Musa Kazem
Abstract
In the first decades of the Abbasid’s rule, they encountered the Shiite movements based on Zayd's political thought. One of these movements that took place during the time of Ma'mun in 199 AH is the Ibn Tabataba movement. Although the movement spread from Kufa to Hejaz and from the east to Ahvaz in a short period, it did not succeed due to the rupture of its socio-family identity. Based on analytical methods, the analysis of the social identity of the Ibn Tabataba movement, with an emphasis on the role of Zayd, is the topic of this research. The sociological study of the disintegration of the social identity of the Ibn Tabataba movement can be formulated based on four axes of social identity, namely, structure, process, beliefs of the movement, and active forces. The findings of this study show that Zayd ibn Musa, along with other Alawites, sought to spread the movement among all the people of the region and other lands by using inappropriate tools and behaviors. Violent behavior in the administration of cities and against rivals prevented them from institutionalizing the movement's beliefs and support of the people. In other words, the Shiite identity of the movement was not able to institutionalize its thought among its followers, and as a result, it failed by losing its social base, and consequently, the movement failed.
