Investigating the Situation and  Development of Carpet production and Trade in Soltan Abad During the Qajar Period

Abstract
The Iranian carpet industry revived during the Qajar period in the first half of the 19th century and its production and trade expanded to a high degree in the early 20th century. Sultanabad ( Iraq) which was one of the most important centers of carpet weaving in the late Qajar period, provided a high percentage of the country's carpet production and exports. This research focuses on the development of carpet production and trade in Soltanabad during the Qajar period. The research by using a descriptive-analytical method is based on documents from the National Archives Organization and the Documentation Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  The research shows that in the first half of the 19th-century carpet weaving in Soltanabad mostly was made by urban and rural carpet weavers in homes and was mainly traded in domestic markets.  But in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century due to the important location of the Iraqi region, the availability of skilled and abundant manpower (weavers), access to good quality wool from the west, and the investment of domestic and foreign traders and companies in the Soltanabad carpet industry, carpet production, and its export increased significantly.   This kind of hand-woven carpet mainly was exported to the European countries and the United States.
