The Historical Background  of Clothing of the Bakers in the Ashura Funeral Ceremony in the Village of Jazan Damghan

Abstract
In the village of Jazan, on the day of Ashura, the bakers with a special cloth that has a symbol of the angel on it, run in front of the horse of Imam Hussein and his companions. This study investigates the clothing and position of the bakers in their historical context. This descriptive-historical study examines the development of the style of clothing of the bakers in the village of Jazan from the ancient period to the present. In this research, in addition to historical documents, visual evidence of travelogues, drawings, and field research are also been used. The results of the study show that in ancient times and the early Islamic period, bakers were similar to Ayaran and Pahlavan (champion) in terms of clothes. During the Safavid, Qajar, and Pahlavi eras, the bakers were at the service of the upper strata of the society, and the design and color of their clothing depended on the social situation and the impact of foreign culture. In the contemporary period, the clothing of the bakers is reflected in popular culture and appeared in the Ashura ceremony in black and green colors. The symbolic signs of the clothing reflect religious beliefs and cultural traditions. The common symbolic signs of the clothing in various historical periods show the heredity and importance of the role of the bakers in the Ta’ziyeh ceremony that has been sustained until now.
