Enclousion and Security of Hunting in the Naseri Period
Abstract
During the Qajar era, hunting was one of the hobbies of kings and high-ranking officials. Hunting was part of the Iranian culture and also was a way to get ready for combat. Enclousion was a way that was closely related to hunting. During the reign of Nasser al-Din Shah, due to his great interest in hunting and the advance of hunting facilities and tools, the issue of enclousion became more important than ever. The present study, using a descriptive-analytical method, seeks to answer these questions: What were the security measures for the enclosure? And what were the consequences of enclousion and exclousion? The research findings show that many hunting grounds of the Nasseri era were made by his order. Nasser al-Din Shah ordered enclousion of areas that had many animals so that he could hunt in peace. Some areas were also guarded and protected from offenders. These hunting had several consequences for the animal and plant environment. Whenever an area was under the protection of the king and his entourage, animals were hunted. This caused the number of animals gradually declined and eventually most animal species were annihilated such as in the famous hunting grounds of Jajrud where no animal and plant was left.
